Calming the Shen Before Birth

As the final weeks of pregnancy approach, preparation is not only about packing a hospital bag or getting everything ready for baby. It can also be a time to turn your attention inward, creating space for rest, connection and calm.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the concept of the Shen is often associated with the mind, spirit and emotional wellbeing. During the final weeks of pregnancy, nurturing a sense of stillness can become an important part of preparing for birth.

Nourishing Blood and creating stillness helps regulate the nervous system and supports oxytocin flow.

Creating Space for Stillness

The final weeks before birth can bring a mixture of emotions. Excitement, anticipation, tiredness and uncertainty can all be part of the experience.

Simple daily rituals can offer an opportunity to slow down and reconnect with your body and your baby.

This might mean taking a gentle walk, sitting quietly with a warm drink, practising slow breathing, resting when your body asks for it or simply spending a few uninterrupted moments connecting with your baby.

Birth preparation does not always have to mean doing more. Sometimes it can also mean creating space to do less.

36 Weeks

Birth Preparation

Checklist

  1. Eat 3–6 dates daily (not advisable with Gestational Diabetes)
  2. Stay hydrated with warm fluids
  3. Practice relaxation / breathwork
  4. Gentle movement or walking daily
  5. Prepare hospital bag
  6. Book acupuncture or bodywork sessions
  7. Connect with baby daily
  8. Prioritise rest and sleep

These final weeks can be an opportunity to gently establish routines that support both physical and emotional preparation for birth.

Rather than viewing the checklist as another list of things that must be accomplished, use it as a reminder to nourish yourself, rest and make time for connection.

Connecting With Baby

Among appointments, preparations and everyday responsibilities, taking a few quiet moments each day to connect with your baby can become a meaningful ritual.

Place your hands on your belly. Slow your breathing. Notice your baby’s movements. Allow yourself a few moments where nothing else needs your attention.

These small pauses can help create a sense of presence as you approach birth.

Closing Ritual

As you prepare for the transition ahead, finish your day or relaxation practice with these simple words:

My body knows how to open.
My baby knows how to be born.

Allow yourself to repeat them slowly, breathe deeply and create a moment of stillness.
