Example Herbal Indigo Paste
- Qing Dai powder – 1 part
- Aloe vera gel or neutral cream base – 5–10 parts
- Optional: small amount Zi Cao powder
Mix ingredients into a smooth paste and apply a thin layer to affected areas 1–2 times daily. This
preparation provides a cooling, anti-inflammatory effect and helps calm burning and itching.
Herbal Wash for Inflamed Lesions
- Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle)
- Lian Qiao (Forsythia)
- Huang Bai (Phellodendron)
- Ku Shen (Sophora)
- Zi Cao (Lithospermum)
Decoct herbs for 20 minutes, allow to cool until warm, then gently cleanse the affected area using sterile
gauze. This wash may be used two to three times daily to reduce inflammation and help prevent
secondary infection.
Zi Cao Healing Oil (Later Healing Stage)
- Zi Cao – 10 g
- Olive oil or jojoba oil – 100 ml
Gently heat herbs in oil for 1–2 hours on very low heat, strain and store in a sterile bottle. Apply lightly to
areas once vesicles have dried to support skin regeneration.
Clinical Notes
- Avoid heavy creams over open vesicles during the early stage.
- Cooling gels, powders, and herbal washes are preferred during active eruptions.
- Herbal oils and repair creams are better suited to the healing stage.
- External treatments are often combined with acupuncture and internal herbal formulas.
